When Ford needed to replace its favorite family member, Anglia, it took the formula used for the Cortina and shrunk it.

The resulting 1967 Escort was a simple car mechanically, with four-cylinder gasoline engines with rear-wheel drive - unlike most of the competition.

However, the Escort had a modern American-inspired style that attracted millions of British buyers.

While offering sensible family transportation, the Escort has also proved formidable in motorsport, and has become one of the most successful rally cars of all time. This has led to a variety of sports bars accessible to the road, too, with legendary names like Mexico and RS2000 created to profit from rally success.
