Jaguar XJ is a series of luxury cars by British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars (which became Jaguar Land Rover in 2013)

Since 1968 in four basic generations of platform (debuting in 1968, 1986, 2003 and 2009) with several updated derivatives of each. Since 1970, they have been Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar show to feature Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in numerous high profile media and appearances. The current XJ (X351) was launched in 2009.

The XJ6, using the 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-liter (4,235 cc (4,225 cc)) six-cylinder in-line versions of the company's renowned XK engine Jaguar, replaced most of Jaguar's salons - which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate tracks. In addition to the engines, other main assemblies inherited from previous models were the larger version of Jaguar X's IRS unit from Mark X and the independent front suspension mounted on the auxiliary chassis, first seen on the 1955 Mark 1, with new anti-dive geometry .

Jaguar XJ6 (Series I model)

A luxury version was marketed under the Daimler brand as Daimler Sovereign, continuing the name of the Daimler version of the Jaguar 420.

The car was launched in September 1968. Power-assisted steering and leather upholstery were standard on the 2.8 L De Luxe and 4.2 L models, and air conditioning was offered as an optional extra on the 4.2 L. Daimler versions launched in October 1969, in a series of television ads with Sir William. In these ads, he referred to the car as "the best Jaguar of all time". An unusual feature, inherited from the Mark X and S-Type bars, was the provision of two fuel tanks, positioned on each side of the boot / trunk and filled with two keyed fill caps: one on the top of each wing above the rear wheel arches. Preliminary reviews of the car were favorable, observing the effective brakes and good driving quality.

In March 1970, it was announced that the Borg-Warner Model 8 automatic transmission, which the XJ6 has had since 1968, would be replaced in the 4.2-liter XJ6 with a Borg-Warner Model 12. unit. [4] The new transmission now had three different forward positions accessed via the selector lever, which effectively enabled performance-oriented drivers to maintain lower rates at higher revs to achieve better acceleration. "Significantly improved shift quality" was also claimed for the new system. [4]

At that time, minor changes were also made, such as moving the rear spotlights from side to side below the rear lights; inside, the chrome bezels were replaced by black ones, to reduce disturbing reflections.

In 1972, the option of a long wheelbase version, providing a 4-inch increase in legroom for passengers in the rear seats, became available.

The XJ12 version was announced in July 1972, featuring a simplified grille treatment and powered by a 5.3 L V12 engine (coupled to a Borg Warner Model 12 transmission). The car, presented at the time, was the only mass-produced 12-cylinder four-door car and, with a top speed of "225 km / h", as the "fastest four-seater car available in the world today". Although it was the manufacturer's intention, since launch, that the XJ would carry the twelve-cylinder engine, its installation was nevertheless a tight fit, and providing adequate cooling was evidently a challenge for the engineers who designed the installation. [6] Hood / hood grilles, like those installed in the recently introduced twelve-cylinder type E, were rejected, but the XJ12 featured a complex "cross-flow" radiator divided into two separate horizontal sections and supported on coolant feed tanks at each end: the engine the fan was engaged to rotate at 1¼ times the speed of the engine rotation, subject to a limiter that cuts at a speed (of the fan) of 1,700 rpm. The fuel system incorporated a relief valve that returned fuel to the tank when the pressure in the carburettor conductors exceeded 1.5 psi to reduce the risk of steam blockages at the high engine operating temperature, while the car battery, exceptionally , benefited from its own thermostatically controlled cooling fan.

Foram construídas 3.235 unidades dos XJ12s de primeira geração. Uma versão de engenharia de crachá, o Daimler Double-Six, foi introduzida em 1972, [7] revivendo o nome do modelo da Daimler de 1926 a 1938.
