According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of recovered people today stands at 208,400.

Southern Africa has the highest number of cases (174,327) and accounts for 2,932 deaths, the vast majority concentrated in South Africa, the country with the most infections on the entire continent (168,061) and which has 2,844 fatalities.

North Africa leads the number of deaths (4,481), with 105,583 infections.

West Africa counts 1,366 dead in 79,274 infected, East Africa has 1,105 fatalities in 37,972 cases, while in Central Africa there are 774 killed in 36,444 infections.

Egypt, the African country with the most fatalities, now accounts for 3,120 deaths and 71,299 cases of infection, followed by South Africa and then Algeria, with 928 fatalities and 14,657 infected.

Among the five most affected countries is Nigeria, with 616 deaths and 27,110 infected, and Sudan, with 602 deaths, despite having a lower number of infections (9,573).

As for the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections and deaths, with 1,654 cases and 24 fatalities.

Cape Verde has 1,301 infections and 15 deaths, while Mozambique counts 918 infected patients and six dead.

São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 717 cases and 13 deaths and Angola has 315 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 17 deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 3,071 cases and 51 deaths, according to Africa CDC.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14 and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 517,000 deaths and infected more than 10.76 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
